The Civil War of 1861-1865 would greatly impact the United States depending on who won the battle, it would decide what type of nation it would be. At the end of the war, two unresolved issues were solved, if the national government would hold more power than the statesgovernment and that all men were created equally with the right to liberty would continue to exist as the largest slaveholding country in the world. It is estimated from a recent study that 850,000 soldiers died from combat, accident, starvation and disease during the war. The end of slavery came at the end of war, this was a major accomplishment for the North and President Lincoln who signed the Emancipation Proclamation. It is important to remember why the Civil War defines America as it stands today, and why the war was fought. It is also important to recognize who won the war and set the standards that the nation follows, and how they won eventhough the odds were against them.
