Week 9 Chapter 4: Coping Processes Concept of Coping Coping refers to efforts to master, reduce or tolerate the demands caused by stress One review of literature found over 400 distinct coping techniques Carver suggests there are 4 distinct groupings of coping o Problem-Focused vs. Emotion Focused o Engagement vs. Disengagement o Meaning-Focused o Proactive 20% of Americans do NOTHING to manage their stress MOST ADAPTIVE: use many coping strategies o People rely on some more than others o Having coping flexibility is more desirable than the one same strategy Flexible copers can differentiate events in terms of controllability and impact Coping strategies vary in their adaptive value o Saying they “coped with their problems” signifies they handled it well Maladaptive strategies are associated with poorer psychological judgement Common Coping Patterns of Limited Value These may be helpful in certain circumstances, but altogether they are counterproductive Giving Up Selgimen’s research: o Animals were subjected to electrical shock o
