Religion Exam 2
*Cover Confuciamism, Daoism, Yoruba, small amount of Shinto
*Religion in China
-Common assumption- there isn’t any religion in China
-This is Bc they’ve been a communist society since 1949, P.R.C. (people’s
republic of china)
- Communism is mostly associated with atheism
-Religion is permitted, but very heavily regulated
-Decided if China finds your religion a threat/ challenging
-They also decide where religion is allowed (daoist football)
-If you practice religion that is not allowed , you end up in prison or thought
*Key Features of Traditional Chinese Religious Thought
-Syncretism- drawing from a lot of different resources
-Buddha help figure out what will happen after death
-Kennyfutzu-help with social +job success
-Laotzu – help solve stress +let you live a long, healthy life
-They draw from the teachings of all these different people, rather than
specifically declaring “Buddhism”, Daoism, etc.
*Use Boddhisatva- not just for Buddhism
-“they only matter if they matter”
-Ex: Shang Ti- Ruler of the universe- this is a particular spirit that fills this spot
temporarily (like president Trump is temporary)
-Shang Ti is as at the top of Chinese cosmology, but he is the least important.
-Shang Ti’s job is to make sure that cosmic things happen, but he doesn’t have a
huge impact on ordinary religious life.
-Ex: Mazu-Ocean goddess- before 1850, she only had temples on the coast-1849,
Chinese went across water to Gold Rush
-The gods+ spirits know they don’t matter unless the matter
-It doesn’t bother them
-Exists in a 2 w-way relationship with human beings.
Ex: “Earth God”- every village in china has an earth god that makes sure
people stay safe + successful.
-If the earth god doesn’t keep people safe, they get “fired” and replaced
with another spirit to occupy that position.
* Humans have obligations to the spirits
-the spirits don’t care if you don’t believe in them.
-they don care of you obey them because they don’t issue any commands.
