Essay #1 - Close reading of a poem (4-5 pgs.) In this essay, you will close read ONE of the four poems in the Assignments section of Blackboard. Use several of the literary terms we've learned (such as alliteration, narrative voice, assonance, enjambment, tone and especially connotation) to analyze the text and figure out how its words, images and sounds contribute to its possible meanings. (NOTE: You can only use one of these four poems, not any of the poems we've read in class) Goal: To help you develop reading skills in order to tackle interpretive problems that a text presents through a well-developed analysis. Advice: Read the poem you choose carefully and take notes before you begin writing. DO NOT merely re-state or sum up what the poem has said. Instead, develop your own insights into what you think the poem means, using specific lines, phrases, words and punctuation to support your observations and to infer what the author hasn't come out and said directly.
