Chapter 7: Thermochemistry 7-1: Terminology System- the part of the universe chosen for study, that can be as large as the oceans of earth or as small as the contents of a beaker. o We will be looking at the transfer of energy (heat and work) and matter between the system and its surroundings. Surroundings- the part of the universe outside the system with which the system interacts. Open system- freely exchanges energy and matter with its surroundings. Closed system- can exchange energy with its surroundings, but not matter. Isolated system- doesn’t interact with its surroundings. Energy- capacity to do work o Units= 1 Joule (J)= 1 kg m^2 s^-2 Work- done when a force acts through a distance o Moving objects do work when they slow down or are stopped. Kinetic Energy- the energy of a moving object. Potential energy- energy due to condition, position, or composition; it is an energy associated with forces of attraction or repulsion between objects. Thermal energy- kinetic energy associated with random molecular motion.
