Ecology and Population Biology Servedio/Peet Endler, 1980 1. According to the paper, what is the proposed mechanism by which the spots aid in predator avoidance? How would you test this? When spot size is reduced, they are not as visible as larger spots at the same distance. This is especially true when the spots are near the limit of the predator’s visual acuity. On coarse gravel, the guppies with the larger spots are more successful in predator avoidance because their spots more closely resemble their background. The guppies will appear very similar to the background gravel when they are seen several centimeters in front of the gravel if the guppies’ spots are smaller than the background. For example, on coarse gravel, guppies with larger spots are at an advantage to guppies with smaller spots, because the larger spots closely resemble the background gravel much more closely than do the smaller ones. To test this I would perform a similar experiment to the greenhouse experiment
