Security Council The Conflict in Syria Russian Federation BACKGROUND INFORMATION On March 15 th , 2011, a group of 200 protestors joined forces in Damascas, the capital of Syria, to demand reforms from the Syrian president Bashar al-Assad. They planned this protest through a group on Facebook named “The Syrian Revolution 2011 Syrian revolt against Bashar al-Assad”. This event marked the beginning of the Syrian Civil War and added another revolt to the list of those that were part of the Arab Spring. After more of these protests took place, citizens began fighting the Syrian government not only because of economic issues within the country and a lack of freedom for the people, but because Assad killed many peaceful protesters who were only speaking their minds. Because of these murders committed by Assad and other issues within the country, at this point in time more than 250,000 Syrians have been killed in the fighting in Syria and almost 11 million Syrians have been displaced from their homes.
