2 The agency I am working for this semester is Head Start, located in Minot. Head Start is a federal program which serves children ages zero to five years old. Head Start serves two different ages of need, there is early head start, which is zero to three, and head start which ages three to five. Head Start is means tested and clients are required to meet federal income guidelines for enrollment. The agency provides children with child care four days a week for six hours a day. In addition, Head Start gives each child breakfast, lunch and a snack. They also have the children brush their teeth after breakfast. In 1965, President Johnson created the Head Start program after recognizing there was a large need for free child care in the country. The program grew quickly and by the 1970’s the early Head Start program, was established. Throughout the 1980’s and 90’s the number of children increased as did the services provided. Head Start began to work with families in their homes, children with disabilities, and homeless families (USDHHS Timeline). The current mission of Head Start is “commitment to the growth, well-being and literacy of the families we serve. We recognize parents as the primary teacher in their child’s life. We empower families through six principles…” (Parent handbook). At the Minot Head Start there are approximately 130 employees and 325 students. There are three locations for Minot Head Start; the downtown location, the Jefferson location and there is also one located on Minot Air Force Base. The office administration workers have varying degrees, the teachers are licensed teachers, the aids are required to have a high school degree, and the family services coordinators were also teachers. Head Start is a federally granted program, as part of the U.S Department of Health & Human Services. North Dakota received a total of $32,000 in federal money in 2015 for its 3,442 children (Facts Sheet 2015).

3 As of right now, I am learning a few different jobs. One day a week I work as an aid in a classroom on the base, where I’m helping a five year old boy with behavioral issues. I am also working three days a week in the family services office. There I have three clients that I’m following for the semester with their in home visits, office questions, child studies, and check- ups.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
