DIFFERENCES AND INEQUALITIES/SEXUALITY a. Questions: i. Why is claiming one’s sexuality a feminist issue? ii. How do patriarchal societies control women’s sexuality? iii. What is the effect of heterosexuality/homophobia/heterosexism? b. Definitions: i. Sexuality: heterosexuality and homosexuality 1. Identity related to sexual practice ii. Sexism: discrimination on basis of sex 1. Assumption of male dominance as a norm 2. Institutionalized valuing of one sex over another iii. Heterosexism : discrimination on the basis of heterosexuality 1. Heterosexuality as the norm and is favored over homosexuality iv. Homophobia: unfounded fear of same sex relations
