This meant that religion, politics, and the economy would be controlled by the ruler from his capital. The move toward absolutism in France began with the work of Richelieu and reached its zenith with the reign of Louis XIV. Louis gathered all the reins of government to himself at the Palace of Versailles and was able to control everything except religion. He was almost but not quite absolute.
