What disorder did you choose to write about?I chose lumbar degenerative disc disease. This disease hits home for me. I have degenerative discdisease. I have been through physical therapy 13 times, epidural steroid injections, and surgery. They didartificial disc replacement(ADR), with two cages put in.Let's talk about what this disease is. Nearly everyone’s spinal disc shows signs o wear as we age.Everyone will not have degenerative disc disease. This is not an actual disease this condition in which adamaged disc cause pain. There is a wide range of symptoms and severity is associated with thiscondition.The disc is like shock absorbers between the bone of the spine and is designed to help thebackstay flexible while resisting terrific forces in many different plans of motion.Each disc has two partsto them. The first part is a firm, tough outer layer, the annulus fibrosis. The outer portions of this layercontain nerves. If the disc tears in this area it can be very painful. The second part is a soft, jellylike core,the nucleus pulpose. This part of the disc contains proteins that can cause tissue they touch to becomeswollen and tender. If these proteins leak out to the nerves of the outer layer of the disc, they can causea great deal of pain. They are unlike other tissues of the body, they have a very low blood supply. Once a
