1. What are the pros and cons of using expatriates instead of relying on local employees? According to Ferraro and Briody there are three pros and three cons when it comes to using expatriates instead of relying on local employees. The pros when using local employees are: they tend to be more cost effective as the company doesn’t have to relocate any of their employees or families. Using local employees also presents a positive image in the eyes of the foreign nation, as they applaud the company creating jobs for their people. There are also many local employees who are highly qualified for the job, and have the added benefit of already knowing the culture. The cons of hiring local employees over using expatriates are: it can isolate certain parts of the company, specifically any overseas operations. The company also hurts valuable lessons, and skills expatriates can acquire from working abroad. If the trend continues, the company’s manager pipeline will start to suffer.
