Kyle Colyn Dr. Eppinga Bio 125 10-31-16 Dr. Jill M Weimer Dr. Jill M. Weimer came to speak to us about the problem of several untreatable diseases and specifically Batten disease. There are 14 genetic mutations of Batten disease and Dr. Weimer was studying the specific mutation called, CLN 6. Dr. Weimer works at a company called Sanford which is a large health facility. Dr. Weimer has studied Batten disease extensively and has come up with several solutions to treat the disease, though the treatments often come with side effects. Dr. Weimer works hard to not only treat this one disease, but to come up with treatments that will also be effective on other currently untreatable diseases. There are several challenges that face Dr. Jill Weimer and her team in their goal of advancing Therapeutic Development for Rare Diseases. The greatest problem that they face is that there are about 7,000 different rare diseases that exist today. Knowing that there are so
