Clay Ashford The Gospel of John’s account of Jesus’ discourse with Nicodemus in chapter three and with the Samaritan woman in chapter four portray Jesus in a different light from the other gospels. In both stories, Jesus focuses on the importance of spirituality and knowing the truth to achieving salvation. Jesus tells Nicodemus in John 3:21 that he and his followers speak of what they know that Nicodemus has not received their testimony. Similarly, he says to the Samaritan woman in John 4:23 that she worships what she does not know, but he and his followers worship what they know and that God must be worshiped in spirit and truth. Both stories also connect water and salvation. In his conversation with Nicodemus, Jesus says that one has to be born of the water and the spirit to enter the kingdom of heaven and in John 4:10-15 he talks at length about the living water bringing eternal life. The key difference between the two stories is the person Jesus is talking to. Nicodemus is an educated Pharisee, and the Samaritan woman appears to be lower class and uneducated.

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
