Discussion Board Forum 4 Hello Class, In a diverse cultural world, counselors must ensure that they are ethical when counseling a diverse group of individuals. Although multicultural counseling can be very challenging, the American Counseling Association (2014) state that every counselor is charged with filling themselves with a wealth of information as they become aware of the populace and the diversity of their client. They should learn and maintain a skill set that will help assess their diverse client’s issues which will allow them to give sound advice without prejudice. Lastly, having compassion for multicultural clients will give the client the ability to express themselves, leading to establishing trust (p. 8). Counselors are provided a wealth of information to help them with counseling. The Multicultural and Social Justice Counseling Competencies (MSJCC) can direct counselors in “counselor self-awareness, client worldview, counseling relationship, and counseling and advocacy interventions. The MSJCC also include specific suggestions for developing this competence in counselors’ attitudes and beliefs, knowledge, skills, and actions” (Hays & Erford, 2018, p. 559). When counselors diagnose and assess clients, they must include every aspect of their clients’ diverse lives because the moment they disregard their cultural differences, they are leaving room for unethical practices to occur (Hays & Erford, 2018).
