REL3851.E1_Assignment5 1. Discuss why communication is the heart of healthy family life. Pages 239-240 Communication is the heart of family life in that family members relate through verbal and nonverbal conversations to express their point of view, desires, and main feelings. Through their direct expressions of feelings and passions, family members come to know one another in very subjective ways. When family members converse and express themselves in their own distinctive ways, family relationships cultivate and develop. With an increased ability to communicate, however, the family can become a lively system whose members learn to participate in significant communication. 2. What factors in recent years have increased the individual sense of alienation and loneliness? Illustrate from your own experience. Page 242 A number of characteristics of modern society have increased the sense of isolation and seclusion. The frequency of obscurity and impersonalization in our society leads to phony connections. Many people live together on the same city block, but most of them know very little about their neighbors, let alone launch any impression of relationship with them. When I was younger, our neighbors knew who we were and knew our family. If we did something erroneous or out of order, our parents knew before we made it to our front door. I guess with so much corruption and violence in today’s society, people find it tough to trust other people particularly with their children. 3. Studies of infant development recommends that babies who do not received open expressions of love will be less able to acknowledge or express love to others during their lifespan. Children who lack enough attention, even though they may receive suitable physical care, hurt significantly. It is emotionally rewarding for all people to engross with others on an individual and emotional level. Doing so shows the desire for communication and interdependency. Expressing our feelings helps us to recognize and accept our emotions. Individuals who struggle with expressing emotions verbally may ask various questions to see if it is acceptable to use their body language to show love rather than to use words. Family members can express feelings for one another in a number of ways. A person can show love by a smile, a hand gesture, hug, blowing a kiss and many other ways. 4. What keeps some people from expressing love? Pages 246-247 Fear is possibly the number one reason family members miss the mark to express their love to others. When we express ourselves generously, we become weak to the other’s reaction. It is not just our feelings that we expose, but our feeling for the other person. The fear of conveying love is partly a warning sign of low self-esteem. When family members believe they have little to offer, they feel their languages of love have no

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
