Discussion Catalase commonly found in almost all living organisms that is under exposure of oxygen. Hydrogen peroxide can be converted to oxygen and water molecule by catalase which can be shown in the equation: 2H 2 O 2 2H 2 O + O 2 . Meanwhile, Manganese dioxide is used in tube 5 and 6, thus, the equation for tube 5 and 6 is : 2H 2 O 2 + MnO 2 2H 2 O + O 2 . The cellular role of catalase is to defend the cells from oxidative damage caused by hydrogen peroxide which is a type of reactive oxygen species (ROS). ROS are highly chemically reactive chemical species that involves oxygen. ROS can damage the DNA , RNA and proteins. ROS are product of cellular metabolism from aerobic organisms. Therefore, hydrogen peroxide are converted into water and oxygen by catalase enzyme. (Chidrawi, Robson, & Hollis, 2008) Peroxisome is involved in this experiment. Peroxisome is a cytoplasmic cell organelle found in eukaryotic cells containing catalase which will involved in the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide in this experiment.
