Week 5The purpose of this post is to discuss the behavioral risk factor obesity, how it is impacting the community, and effective downstream, midstream, and upstream interventions. “As poor dietary habits and physical inactivity have become endemic, national obesity rates havesoared” (Knickman & Kovner, 2015, p. 125). According to , as of 2017, Tennessee has the sixth highest obesity rate at 34.8%. Obesity is such as strong risk factor for poor health, as it is directly linked to diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, and even some types of cancers. How can we change behavior to lower the rates of obesity in order to ensure continued health for our communities?The population-based intervention model proposed by McKinlay addresses downstream, midstream, and upstream interventions to address and change behavior. (Knickman & Kovner, 2015). A downstream intervention is focused on the individual and would include group or individual counseling, self help programs, or pharmacologic treatments. An example would be a provider counseling their patient on changes to make to their diet, prescribing an exercise
