Gabrielle Daniel S ec 039 11/21/06 Brief Rhetorical Analysis of a largely successful Literature Review 1. What is the overall Purpose in any Literature Review, and how does this Intro and Thesis demonstrate that? The overall purpose of a literature review is to harmonize a collection of data that all address a specific idea, so that a general conclusion can be made about the status of knowledge known on a topic. In this literature review the author clearly states what his/her purpose for the literature view is on a specific topic while also stating and characterizing the status of the knowledge already known on that topic using the articles provided. 2. Is the Thesis Statement agreeing or disagreeing with one source? Is it purely topic based? As an “umbrella” like statement, does is take a broad enough view of the literature as a whole, while still asserting its characteristics? Is it discussing the nature of the research? The thesis here is not agreeing or disagreeing with just one source. In fact this thesis isn’t agreeing with anything at all. The thesis here is making a characterized statement about what is going to be achieved in the paper, then states the agreement of disagreement status between the articles and not personal about the articles. 3. Read the second paragraph. This is designed to provide an overview of the topic, using the sources to build that overview. Those with more concrete topics will build a working definition gained from the different sources collectively. If you choose, the overview may come as part of the introductory paragraph, or may come (as is the case here) as a mix between overview and body paragraph-style synthesis in the second paragraph. Do you get a sense of the Topic in the first or second paragraphs? How? There is a sense of topic however it is not a very strong sense of topic. To me the second paragraph reads more like an overview in body paragraph style but does not execute all the necessary mechanics of a true body paragraph. The topic sentence is structured like that of an overview. 4.
