Self-Improvement and Character Building for ChildrenIntroductionMilwaukee College Prep is a four-campus network of K-8 schools that is committed to eliminating the achievement gap so that all children gain the knowledge and character to determine their own destinies. Milwaukee College Prep is a MPS charterschool located in several of the most impoverished, violent, and oppressed zip codes in the country. Based in the 53210 and 53205 zip codes, it is difficult to believe that these schools are making a difference until you walk through their doors. Milwaukee College Prep is a K-8 school that has grown from one campus in 1997 to four campuses in its nineteen years of existence. Founded my Ron and Mickey Sadoff, Milwaukee College Prep’s original name was Marva Collins Prep. The name came about after the couple watch a 60 Minute special on the Marva Collins Prep School based in Chicago, Illinois inone of the worse neighborhoods in the city. Marva Collins believed that all children can learn and every child’s birthright is to receive a first rate education. She believed and demonstrated in her classroom that teaching children is not just about academics, but it is about character as well. Soon after watching that the 60 Minute Special, the Sadoff’s opened Marva Collins Prep School in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Even through growth, the schools mission has not changed and neither has the vision. Milwaukee College Prep’s mission statement is Knowledge plus character paves the road to college and beyond. Theschool’s vision statement is College Bound. Character Strong. Even though close to 83% of the scholars that attend are economically disadvantaged, that does not mean they are not capable of becoming outstanding citizens that will contribute to making the world a better place. Milwaukee College Prep bases itsfoundation on five core values: Trust, Respect, Excellence, Courage, and Knowledge. 2
Self-Improvement and Character Building for ChildrenEach value is represented for two months during the school year .The way this can occur is through the usage of restorative justice techniques as well as teaching scholars the 7 habits of effective people, teens, and kids as well as holding them to high expectations, every week or every two weeks through proactivity lessons and loving them unconditionally. Scholars are also taught thirty character skills, one, assemblies, and role-play. When scholars struggle with character, they are reminded that their emotional bank account is withdrawn and a deposit needs to be made. Deposits are supposed to be the positive portion of the process however; it has become negative and less effective. The purpose is to create a project that will assist with revamping this process and outlining how the changes will create a healthier environment for scholars to make poor choices, and gain more tools to use when those issues arise in the future to make better choices.
