Changing the Mindset – The Deposit ProcessIntroductionThe project that is being proposed to the Milwaukee College Prep management and boardis to alter the current discipline system that has been in place since 1997. This system was alteredback in 2014 in regards to how middle discipline was handled. The middle school scholars were placed on button, which included them wearing a button for one to three days depending on the infraction. The buttons had positive proverbs and they were several different colors to accommodate the infraction that was committed. That change took an entire school year as well as parent support to have it changed. Milwaukee College Prep feels that their discipline systems teach scholars character and values they will most definitely need in the real world. The proposal will need to complete in different parts, one being written as well as PowerPoint, next real time data showing the differences between the current system and the new proposed system, and lastly parent testimonials of how they feel the new program is more beneficial than the old. Each part will involve several individuals from leadership teams from each campus as well as staff that will complete the process daily with staff and relay that information to their parents. This will also involve a great deal of survey information that needs to be gathered from scholars, staff, and parents are well on if the change has truly impacted the children, the culture, and if the artifacts that are being created are useful. Risk or No Risk. There is a significant risk in submitting this to the management team and board becausethis has been the Milwaukee College Prep way for nineteen years. The flagship campus did havean issue with the removal of the button system from the middle school because they felt thesystem was built on the fundamental values of Milwaukee College Prep as well as the staff.2
Changing the Mindset – The Deposit ProcessWhen the initial changes started, the newer campuses had to explain that it is not defaulting onour values or expectations but enhancing them so that others can have an alternate way ofviewing things. Many felt that system was demeaning and lacked empathy, just as other felt thesystem was empathetic and taught scholars valuable lessons. Many feel the way about the currentdiscipline system for elementary. Parents have voiced they feel there is not any incentives forscholars to turn their behavior around after a deposit due to lack of true reflection of their actionsas well as action steps they can put into place in the future if a similar situation arises.
