Chapter 6: Groups and Organizations Feb. 16, 2017 Primary group: a small group characterized by intimate, face to face association and cooperation o Expressive function o Family; close friends Secondary group: a formal, impersonal group in which there is little social intimacy or mutual understanding In group: any group or category to which people feel like they belong o Develops feelings based on race, ethnicity, gender, religion, etc. Out group: a group to which people feel they do not belong Usually antagonistic relations between in and out groups Reference groups: a group that individuals use as a standard for evaluating themselves and their own behavior o Set and reinforce standards of conduct Influence how ppl will act o Serve as a standard against which people can measure themselves and others- am I better or worse than others Test averages; others? o Shift reference groups as we take on different statuses in our lives
