1952The candidates during this election year were governor Adlai Stevenson for the democrats and Dwight D. Eisenhower for the republicans. The issues that were primarily discussed in the ads were the Korean war and the tactics that would be used, the problem with the high cost of living, and the current or previous corrupt government. Eisenhower portrayed himself as the guy who would save the country. Like many presidents do, he claimed to have the solution to every problem without really offering a solution at all. In the commercial “sturdy lifeboat”, a concerned citizen explained that he was nervous about getting married because he did not think he and his wife could survive off his income after taxes. Eisenhower answers by stating that the reason for this citizen’s concern is a result of the democrats’ poor decisions. He claims the democrats put the country in debt and are using high taxes to make up for it. instead ofoffering a solution or at least any idea he claims he will “put out a sturdy lifeboat”. While Eisenhower did build himself up with these empty claims he never really put down his opponent directly, instead he focused on portraying himself as the man with the solutions. Stevenson went the same route, spending more time boosting himself rather than putting his opponent down. While Eisenhower was a known general, Stevenson worked on his angle as the “common man”. In his commercial “I love the gov”, the singer stated, “I’d rather have a man with a hole in his shoe than a hole in everything he says”. In this time when a big issue is changing the corrupt government, he can use his “common man” image as a way to appeal to those voters who see a change in the white house staff a top priority. 1960The candidates for this election were John F. Kennedy for the democrats and Richard Nixon for the republicans. The issues during this campaign were, how to help the civil rights movement, ending the cold war threat, and the growing communist regime in Cuba, which was the closest communist regime to the United States. In these ads, there again was not much bashing done to their opponents. Each candidate focused instead on their own personal strengths and told the voters how they would help improve the country. Kennedy and Nixon were very different in age and experience. They both chose to use those two factors as aids in their campaigns. Nixon’s ads are filmed in a clean office while he is dressed up in a suit. The setting makes it look like he is already fit for the job. He focuses a lot on communism and equality.
