Biology 1101 Ch. 1 Review Questions 1. It is difficult to formulate a simple definition of life because life evolves which means the definition of life can change from generation to generation. 2. DNA is the molecule of inheritance in cells. 3. A) cell: smallest living unit B) metabolism: cells obtain and convert energy from its surroundings and they use energy to maintain itself, grow, and produce more cells C) energy: capacity to do work D) ATP (adenosine triphosphate): delivers energy to most energy requiring metabolic reactions 4. Organisms sense changes in their surroundings by using their receptors which detect stimuli. Then the cells in the organisms adjust metabolic activities in response to the signals from their receptors. 5. Levels of Biological Organization Biosphere (all regions of the Earth’s crust, waters, and atmosphere) Ecosystem (community and its physical environment) Community (populations of all species living in the same area) Population (same species occupying the same area) Multicelled Organism (individual consisting of interdependent cells) Organ System (two or more organs interacting chemically and/or physically) Organ (structural unit in which tissues perform a common test)
