Amighanne MendozaDH 122Dental Specialty of Pediatric Dentistry2.How is the atmosphere different in a pediatric dental office different and similar to the atmosphere in the Shoreline clinic?I always wanted to work in a Pedo office ever since I became a Dental Assistant. Now that I’m in school for Dental Hygiene, I’m still considering working in a Pedo office. I alwayslove kids and I love seeing them at work. I love doing something for the kids. It always makes me feel extra special! Every Pedo office is different, but one mechanism that every Pedo office have is they always treat their patients with the most utmost care. Yes, many people will always ask you, “Why would you want to work with kids?” My answer is I love kids and I love putting smile in their faces. I like being able to help them and educate them on how they can take care of their teeth. Being in a Pedo office, the environment and language are a little different than being in ageneral dentist office or in the Shoreline clinic. In a Pedo office, the environment has to be kid friendly and you must have patience. Like they say, “Patience is a virtue.” Most Pedo office has a prize box or something for the kids to pick out of when their appointment is done, possibly there will be some type of electronic devices such as TV, iPad, and etc. for entertainment to make their appointment more comfortably, and most likely a play room area where the kids can play and relax. These necessities are not present in the Shoreline Clinic. In the Shoreline Clinic, there is no play room area, no electronic devices available for kids, and the clinic is not a quiet area for kids to be comfortable with. Since the clinic is a school clinic, the dental setting is very different. The space is very limited to the patient, the waiting time and appointment are very long, and sometimes if the patient has some severe case related to their health or dental related, we cannot treat them in the clinic. The biggest difference between the Pedo office and the Shoreline clinic is there is no privacy between patients. There is no wall separating operatories and everyone can pretty much hear everyone’s conversation.
