THEORY APPLICATIONIntroductionIn Ana’s case, it is my belief that individual psychology would be the best fit for her situation. This type of theory will help teach Ana the foundations of coping with her issues and how to minimize her emotional afflictions. This type of theory will also aid the counselor in finding the basis on which her stress is caused from. I chose Adler’s theory because it discusses self-esteem issues and the problems this brings with it. Ana may be suffering from low self-esteem. This will allow me to explain and create solutions, and create a treatment plan for the issues she is currently facing. Appropriate ConceptsAccording to Murdock, there are three factors that individual psychology is guided by: faith, love, and hope (2013). The counselor must be able to trust and have faith in their own abilities and understanding of the client. They must be able to listen in a non-judgmental way (Murdock, 2013). The therapist should be able to express and give hope to their client that it is ok and important to accept life’s challenges, and what is incorporated into the therapy to help aid with this venture. Lastly, love is shown through the counselor’s empathy through listening and establishing this relationship with the client. The counselor must also be sure not to “baby” or “over support” the client and thereby put them into category of being a victim. Ana has no current support system from neither friends nor family. Adler stresses that an emphasis shall be placed on social involvement (Murdock, 2013). This applies to Ana’s current situation and issues. Ana has undergone many major life issues in which have aroused her anxiety and depressive state. With her husband on deployment, she has become a single mother. She has recently lost her job, in which is related to the birth of her son and unable to cope with raising her son and keeping her job. Motivational theory is recognized tremendously within 2
