Friday, August 24 th , 2007 Native Americans Thought to travel across land bridge (Beringia) between Siberia and Alaska (13,000- 9,000 BCE) o Ice Age Mammoths, mastadons, horse herds, etc. died after climate change and overhunting by Indians Also came across land bridge Indians became isolated from world after ice caps flooded o Started hunting small game, fish, shellfish o Developed bow and arrow o Pottery o Textiles (string for nets and fish) o Sandals, baskets, etc. o Semi permanent villages o Abundance of food ALL INDIANS WERE DIFFERENT o Cannot be traced back to a common ancestor o Had different languages Native Americans in present day Central/South America o Developed plants (maize, squash, potatoes, etc) o Settled in villages for plant domestication Urban life began with agriculture o Social structures Nobles, warriors were the elite Peasants planted and gave crops to elite Mayans
