Colleen Alexander  HIS 2365 HW #1 Part 1: Terms 1. Bartolom é  de Las Casas:  Define: Las Casas was a Spanish Jesuit Priest, who had previously owned slaves. After the  Spanish came to the New World the Spanish monarch was hearing rumors about the treatment of the natives. Then, the Spanish monarch asked Las Casas to observe and write an account of the  treatment of the natives in the New World by the Spanish Explorers. Las Casas believed that if  the Spanish are trying to convert the natives, they should not be enslaving them. Las Casas  believed that it would be okay to enslave Africans instead.  Significance: Las Casas came to the New World to discover new territory, new ideas, and  with his new discoveries came new laws. Las Casas account of the mistreatment of the natives  created a new law that enslaving the natives would now be illegal. It also created the Black  Legend which spread all around and was a story about the cruel treatment of natives done by the  Spanish. The Black Legend became a reason why other empires came to the New World in order
