Chapter 9: Patterns of Inheritance- (Bio101 Activity)  Name  Blanca Soriano      Section: _______   Date __________  1. Explain the contribution of Mendel to genetics and how he explains  inheritance.  Gregor Mendel is the father of genetics. He discovered that there are multiple  traits from each characteristic of any organism and those traits can disappear in  one generation and appear on the next generation. He explained inheritance that  the basic patterns of inheritance before the mechanism for in heritance (genes  and chromosomes) weren’t discover yet. 2. Define and distinguish between the P generation, the F1 generation, and  the F2 generation.  P generation: True-breeding parents F1 generation: The offspring of P and monohybrids (If parents differ in 1 trait) F2 generation: The offspring of the F1 generation, and a recessive trait  reappears 3. Define and distinguish between the following pairs of terms:  -  Gene and allele:  Gene: sequence of DNA that codes for a protein and determines a trait Allele: one of two alternate forms of a gene that can have the same locus on  homologous chromosomes and are responsible for alternative traits -  homozygous  and  heterozygous:  Homozygous: when an individual’s gene are both allele are identical Heterozygous: having two different alleles for a trait

-  dominant allele  and  recessive allele:  Dominant allele is an allele whose trait always shows up in the organism when  the allele is present, represented by capital letter, while an recessive allele is  masked when a dominant allele is present, represented by lowercase letter.

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
