According to the textbook Communicate! by Kathleen S. Verderber describes healthy relationships as” Satisfying and beneficial to all those involved” (122). The first type of relationship is Acquaintances. What are Acquaintances? Oxford English Dictionary interprets the word as “the state of knowing someone slightly, without the depth or intimacy of friendship “(“acquaintances”). What type of conversations do we have with Acquaintances? Verderber defines the conversations as “impersonal communication” which means “interchangeable chit- chat” (122). Stuart Ekberg author the journal Maintaining Shared Knowledge of Acquaintances explains “Acquaintances can be understood as a state of having at least some constituent knowledge of another person – their name, appearance, and so on” (606).
