Company offered limited array of life insurance products and was separated into functional divisions. Bureaucracy made the functional areas more rigid Insurance companies were not competing on price Robert Van Fossan was made president in 1972

Clary missed the deadline to bring the new computer systems by several months Crisis crippled the companies and led to bankruptcy of several agents Crisis led the information systems functions and systems user even further apart During mid 1980’s company faced one more crisis as Clary’s system were unable to handle universal life.

HENRY KATES Henry Kates was appointed as president of Mutual Benefit life He worked as general agent on the field and had a natural understanding for concerns of the agents First step he took was to improve the relationship between the home and field
