EFFECTIVE APPROACHES IN LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT Effective Approaches in Leadership and Management As the sheer number of people and life spans have continued to increase the reciprocal demand on our healthcare system has been exponentially stressed and a higher demand placed on those workers and resources as well. The healthcare system as a whole is feeling it across the United States as the population ages and lifespans continue to increase. At the same time as this increased demand is the tightening of the insurance company’s budgets as they put decreases on reimbursements and are shifting the economic landscape of all involved creating an enormous stress on the entire healthcare field and all involved. A business result related to necessity in relation to this is that we are seeing organizations implementing budget cuts resulting in nursing staff being decreased and ratios of patient loads to nurses being elevated. “Overworking leads to fatigue and burnout, which threatens the quality of care and increases the incidence of error. Past research has found links between insufficient nursing staffing and higher rates of hospital readmission and patient mortality. Higher patient loads are also linked to higher rates of nurse turnover, which can be costly, disruptive, and potentially harmful to patient safety.” [Gra16]. The policies and expectations of nurses has not changed and as a direct result these work overloads are causing nurses to become burned out. With this healthcare systems are seeing higher staff turnover rates and difficulty retaining staff. A solution that is being turned to for short term necessity is the use of traveling or better known as agency nurses. When an organizational decision is made to seek the employment of agency nurse’s communication and openness is key for all personnel involved. It is important for nursing leaders to assist with communication. It is a necessity for full time staff and agency staff to understand long and short-term goals in relation to these moves. Having an understood timeframe for this as well as an initiative for long term staffing is key to understanding and staff 2

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
