Assignment 1 is due at 5pm on Wednesday, 6 th of April 2016 . Introduction The aim of this Workshop is to provide an understanding of the ISO 14001 framework for Environmental Management Systems, and to illustrate how EMSs for operating facilities can be developed and continually improved over time. The introduction provides a list of challenges facing companies in the environmental area. Both Environmental Policies as well as Environmental Management Systems should respond to these challenges. The exercises investigate how well the UNSW's policy and EMS covers the requirements laid out in ISO 14001. We also examine UNSW's sustainability report to understand how it can be improved. Learning outcomes After the study of this unit you will be able to: Know the required content of an ISO 14001 EMS. Discuss the reasons for the general, non-outcome specific nature of ISO 14001, and provide reasons why it may lead to environmental improvements. Make suggestions for improving environmental/sustainability reporting. 2 CVEN3701 Workshop – Week 3 – EMS & PER Challenges and Responses Company managers, and increasingly environmental managers appointed within companies, are faced with a plethora of challenges in the area of operating their activities in an environmentally responsible way. The situation facing an Environmental Manager in a corporation is complex and dynamic. Corporations are developing policies, organisational structures and environmental management systems in order to proactively respond to these environmental challenges. Exercise 1 Scrutinise UNSW's Environment Policy by comparing it to the requirements stated in ISO 14001 and 14004.
