AP Government THE US CONSTITUTION Available in your document packet and at: Directions: Read the US Constitution and complete the following questions directly on this worksheet. When asked to cite the Constitution, please list the Article in Roman Numerals, and the section in “normal” numbers- ex. Article I, Section 8. PART I: THE OVERALL STRUCTURE OF THE CONSTITUTION 1. Read each article of the Constitution. Summarize the general purpose or subject of each article in one complete sentence in the chart below. Article I Describes the Legislative branch, it’s officials, their eligibility requirements, the way they are elected and their powers. Article II Describes the Executive branch, it’s officials, their eligibility requirements, the way they are elected and their powers. Article III Describes the judicial power (judicial branch), it’s powers etc. Article IV Includes the procedures of adding new states to the union, and “full faith and credit”(states must honor laws of other states). Article V Gives information on how amendments can be added to the Constitution or on the Applications of the Legislatures, it tells how much majority is needed from different houses of the Congress. Article VI Establishes Supremacy clause and establishes the separation of state and church. Article VII At least the approval of 9 states is needed to ratify the Constitution (at that time). It also includes the names of delegates from the States. 2. Compare Article I with Article II. Which article is longer and more detailed? What does that tell you about the framers belief of Executive Power vs Legislative Power? Article I is longer and more detailed than Article II. The framers believed that the legislative branch is more vast than the executive branch and would be very difficult to control that branch without imposing rules and regulation for each official on this branch. 3. Identify two powers denied from Congress in the Constitution. Migration, importation of slaves and allowing the states to not abide by law.

How does the House of Representatives determine the rules of proceedings (the ability to have debates, riders, etc) Each house must keep a journal of those present is needed to vote a change in the journal by new entry. 5. What eligibility requirements does the Constitution establish for members of the House? Minimum age of representatives should be 25, and should have 7 years of citizenship. 7. What eligibility requirements does the Constitution establish for members of the Senate?
