Surname 1 Runaway slaves’ ads Name Course Instructor Date Introduction The purpose of this article is to study advertisements concerning runaway slaves in the dark days of slavery in America. Historical documentation reveals that slavery was not a walk in the park and many tried to flee the painful experiences. In cases where they disappeared, their masters sought for them and often recaptured them. However, those who managed to escape often took their masters' property albeit in small proportions to fend for themselves. A study into four ads reveals shocking facts about slavery and tendency of slaves to steal. Williamsburg, Friday, September 24, 1736 In the first advert, a shoemaker has run away. 1 His owner seeks him and promises to reward those who provide information leading to his recovery. From the vagabond's description in the advertisement, he is young. Surname 2 oppressive life of the plantation. For one to get to this level, mainly so young must be a challenging experience. Possibly, the terrible experiences made him run away. Additionally, for his poverty, he took with him some items, not his. The advert says he stole a horse and some things inclusive of shoemaking tools. In this case, he used the horse to help him run fast and the tools, to start a new trade elsewhere. Slaves have to steal to make ends meet when they run away.
