Aliveness and the Arts 2 Aliveness and the Arts Introduction La Jetee uses a number of artistic tools to show the experiences of the main character as well as bring out the issue of time movement. Chris marker utilizes still images in sync with sounds devices to change time. The audience travels from the present to the past alongside the main character. There, they discover his childhood memories that haunt his adulthood. Interestingly and perhaps shocking is the fact that it is a memory of his death as well as the sight of his childhood love. Other artistic tools such symbolism and great creativity are also in use. The purpose of this paper is to analyse the use of art in the film’s production and also retell the character’s experiences as hereunder. The film is a science fiction telling events with the help of scientific devices. A case in point is scientific laboratory experiments that help in retrieving the old childhood memories of the hero. Through fictional science reality herein, the hero meets his death (Marker, 1962). Also, he sees how he will die, a traumatizing experience. More importantly, it is worth to note that the death is his secret that he hid all those years. Essentially, Marker uses images in his narration of the entire movie to replicate. Unlike other films, La Jetee uses a form that most literary works do not apply. The uniqueness here is apparent in the limited use of literature which only appears through the narrator's voice. The novel-film uses the image of a childhood affection of the main character to numb the present. To access the secret memory he holds, the character becomes the subject of the experiment and the key to unraveling it. Recollection of memories, however forceful is an art that forms the basis of the film. La Jetee’s focus on the main character’s childhood memories of his death and the woman he loved is artistic in the sense that the film producer shows his ability to retrieve information in the subconscious mind. Although in this case, he uses scientific experiments, he proves himself in some ways. To begin with is his preference of illusions to reality. Also, there is the connection of
