2 Democracy remains a sore subject within the Muslim world. The issue of whether Islam and democracy are compatible is a great concern globally. Primarily, the Muslim world does not embrace similar ideologies. In this essay I will compare and contrast the views of Esposito and Fukuyama on Islam and democracy. Esposito believes that Islam is compatible with democracy whereas Fukuyama postulates that they are incompatible. Accordingly, Fukuyama postulates that the terrorist activities associated with Islam are an indicator of their disregard for democracy. However, both articles agree on the challenges democracy face in Islamic states. According to Esposito, Islamic intellectuals and experts argue for the compatibility of Islam to democracy. With belief in God, they reckon that governance has to be inclusive since all humans are stewards of god and no man is greater than the other. Prominent Muslim political
