2 The future of the twenty-first century geo-politics is set on an interesting path. China’s rise towards supremacy in the international sphere seems inevitable. After the Cold War, the US rose into a formidable nation, without any threat from the West. However, the current political equation seems to pit it against the Asian giant, China. Thus, scholars of international politics opine that the rise of China is inevitable. Accordingly, it is only a matter of time before China equals America in reference to military and economic might. The result would differ depending on how the US and its allies react to the new phenomenon. Equally important is the way China takes up the mantle of world supremacy. The battle will fundamentally revolve around the control of international institutions and systems. Just like the US, China will try to alter the scales towards its interests. Therefore, this essay will compare the views of Mearsheimer in his article, “Can China Rise Peacefully?” and Ikenberry’s, “The Rise of China and the Future of the West: Can the Liberal System Survive?. The two authors share an important insight in the China quagmire. Mearsheimer is of understanding that China’s rise will not be peaceful, while Ikenberry argues that it will not cause problems. Through the offensive realism theory, Mearsheimer is of the opinion that states interested in their security must compete with others for power. 1 Every world power wants to establish dominance over others by maximizing its share of the international political supremacy; hence, every great power seeks hegemony status. The theory, therefore, mandates every state to have allies around it while ensuring that there is no risk of attacks from another powerful state. The truthfulness of this statement cannot be questioned. Primarily, every great nation wants to dominate and have total security from attacks whatsoever. Additionally, a super power’s interest
