The course covers leadership and management from early theories to contemporary perspectives. The course provides you with a conceptually rich framework for understanding managerial leadership effectiveness within organisational contexts. The course aims to enable you to think creatively about the capabilities required of professional managerial leaders, with an emphasis on self-development related to becoming workplace ready. A central feature of this course is the way it highlights the challenges and problems that managing people in organisations pose and the various tools available to solve them. The course will assist you to relate concepts to your own leadership or to the leadership of the people you report to providing opportunities for reflection and for learning-in-action. 2 CLO1 Recognize the appropriateness of different types of leadership styles for a range of employees and organisational settings CLO2 Accurately assess your personal strengths and areas of challenge in order to effectively self-manage towards improved practice CLO3 Explain how effective managerial leaders are able to diagnose and ethically improve the key areas of organisational functioning CLO4 Motivate and influence others in ways that contribute to sustainable organisational performance Learning Activities Students will make use of a variety of diagnostic instruments intended to identify relevant workplace strengths and areas of improvement as part of their preparation for becoming workplace ready. They will also be encouraged to interpret the results of those diagnostics through the lens of key course concepts such as self-leadership strategies, leadership practices and followership. Students will also encounter a variety of case study problems and practice the competencies and capacities useful in addressing those problematic business and organisational situations. Self-awareness, emotional and cultural intelligence and leadership development tools and techniques will be introduced and explored.
