Kaira Mellix 3/30/18 Detailed Outline Film Theory & Criticism I. Introduction A. Question: How does this series undermine heteronormativity in broader culture? B. Thesis/Relevance: Japanese animation has a history of fragmenting females characters for the pleasure of men. Using a frivolous plot as its medium, the anime Ouran High School Host School combats heteronormative stereotypes through gender norms, the female form and queer theory. C. Approach/Trajectory: To make my case, I will use Laura Mulvey’s “Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema” and “Anime: From Akira to Princess Mononoke, Experiencing Japanese Animation” to compare the differences between other anime and OHSHC with the typical fragmentation of the female characters. I will also use “Players and Whiners? Perceptions of Sex Stereotyping in Animé in Japan” and the US to talk about typical gender norms in anime and how OHSHC combats that.
