Chapter by Susan Ramirez about an Inca Kuraka 1. What was the role of Kurakas in the pre-Conquest Andean world? The Kurakas played an essential role in the pre-conquest Andean world. They served as a link between the buaca’s and the ayllu’s. Some of the more acclaimed Kurakas served as political leaders, while others assigned labor, confirmed land usage, mediated community disputes, punished lawmakers, and provided ayllu’s with goods from the land they cultivated. Thus. Allowing Andean people to form a bond to their Gods whom they believed to protect them from human enemies and forces of nature. 2. What does the concept pachacuti mean to the Inca? To the Inca, Pachacuti is an inversion of the their world of transcendental dimensions. 3. How did Don Melchor Carurayco become a Kuraka? When Felipe Caruaryco became too old and sick, his son, Don Melchior Caruayco was still too young to rule. Therefore, two relatives were designated as interim governors. After the two appointed relatives died and he was older he became a Kuraka.
