Chapter by Matthew Restall about a Mayan Translator for Discussion Sections 1. Why did the author Restall present the life of Gaspar Antonio Chi in reverse? This allows the reader to develop a deeper understanding of the life of a Xiu leader, who was a translator and a notary for the leading Spanish bishops and politicos in the Yucatan peninsula. The author claims that it demonstrates who Chi became and explores how he got there, allowing us as readers to see what Yucatan become and how it got there as well. 2. How did Chi at the end of his life engage in acts that showed a familiarity and identification with Spanish culture? Chi’s great grandson received a Christian name on his baptism as well as the surname of his Spanish father, “del Castillo.” Therefore, the permanence of the Spanish presence in Yucaton was evident in the baptismal ceremony, the building and city it took place in, and the blood of Chi’s descendants.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
