Before going in depth on that topic, it is important to understand how the brain communicates first. The brain communicates through networks of neurons. These neurons pass messages between different structures in the brain. Some nerve networks in the brain that help out this process are neurons to neurons, neurotransmitters, receptors, and transporters. Drug abuse has been a case study now for many years. Upon this research, it was discovered that drugs affect the brain by tapping into the communication center and interferes with the normal process of how neurons send, receive, and process information. A drug like heroin can activate neurons due to the chemical structure of it imitating a natural stimulate. With a drug having the capabilities to mimic a natural stimulate, this can be a very dangerous drug to
