CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION 1.1 Background and Problem Statement Watermelons or its scientific name known as Citrullus lanatus , are one of the tropical fruit that originally from West Africa and widely consumed by people around the world. It belongs to the family of Cucurbitacea , which is considered botanical cousins of cucumber, squash and pumpkins. Watermelons are grown out in a tropical region which the best temperature near 30°C and at least for 90 days. In 2016, China is on the top spot as a largest production of watermelon in the world as it produces about 79.2 million of tonnes annually, followed by Iran and Turkey. According to Rasmuna et al. (2015), in Malaysia, watermelons are mostly planted in Johor, Kedah, Kelantan, Pahang and Terengganu. The sizes of fruit varies from 2 to 15 kg, depending on its variety. The standard type of watermelon is Carolina cross, which has a smooth skin, red flesh and the rind is dark green in colour.
