Reasons for Appeasement 1. PUBLIC OPINION Huge increase in electorate o Franchise Act of 1918 o More notice of public opinion Anti-war, in favour of collective security Guernica in Spain, 1937 o Showed London’s vulnerability o Highlighted need to prevent war ( would be devastating) Faith in League of Nations to maintain peace o League of Nations Union: ‘peace ballot’ Public fully supported the League + its priciples 2. DEMANDS SEEN AS JUSTIFIED Politicians felt Treaty of Versailles was too harsh o Hitler: genuine grievances o WW1: caused by all powers Idea of revising the more punitive clauses Chamberlain: possible to sort out grievances rationally + no recourse to war Threat of communism seen as more dangerous than fascism 3. ECONOMIC PRESSURES Economic difficulties o Great Depression o 3 mio. Unemployed o Not able to cut welfare benefits in order to finance rearmament Fear of balance of payments crisis if rearming too quickly o
