Mrs. Egan IB World Religions I 8 December 2017 The Nature of the Human Person in Taoism Living a lifestyle that maintains the Tao is not always easy. There’s always an emphasis on simplicity, contemplation, and non-action. With such a large focus on necessary daily habits, what is the nature of the human person in Taoism? The most fundamental principle that can be practiced daily is living a simple life. According to Jeremy Roberts, “A Taoist accepts the world as it is, adopting an easygoing attitude or perhaps withdrawing without trying to change it, since the world is not the most important reality” ( Japanese Mythology A to Z ). This easygoing attitude is called wu-wei, or, non-action. In its most basic explanation, wu-wei is a state of being in which one’s actions flow with cycles of the natural world. To practice wu-wei is to let go of all desires and dissolve ego; this can be accomplished by removing all materialistic attachments and return to a simple life (referred to as fu: a return to one’s roots).
