HIST 121 Lecture 15 Notes The French Revolution Difficult to identify the beginning of the revolution Revolution is a moment where times began entirely different than what they were before Overturn society was especially prominent in the 19th century France was divided into three estates: clerical estate, aristocracy, and common folk What Made the French Regime Collapse? The Financial Crisis o France was in much debt, and was difficult to pay it off o Tax Farmers The wealthiest French people did not pay much in taxes French debt was caused by the corruption of the French monarchy and their extravagant spending o Jacques Necker Louis XIV appointing this Swiss banker to solve the debt crisis Slashed some of the government spending, and ended much transparency French people did not trust him, so he resigned The Political Crisis o Assembly of Notables Gathering of French elites to decide on political issues o Estates General - May 1789
