Ideology: A fairly coherent and comprehensive set of ideas that explains and evaluates social conditions, helps people understand their place in society, and provides a program for social and political action. Three Types of Ideologies: Conservatism, Liberalism, Socialism Purpose of Ideology: Justifies the exercise of power Passes judgement of historical events Distinguishes political right and wrong Guide to how we behave Helps us understand the world Conservatism Liberalism Socialism Guide to behaviour 1. Tradition 2. Divinity 3. Moral code of society 1. Reason 2. Enlightened self- interest 1. Reason Nature of human nature - Flawed humans - Not perfectible or changeable - Born into station of life - Some extent perfectible - Some extent equal - Inquisitive, competitive - Achievement-oriented - Can improve station in life - can be perfectible - more equal - cooperative (instead of competitive) Unit of Analysis 1.
