Computer Science Principles - Homework #2 1) Why do we use the binary number system when talking about computers? What makes it a good fit for computers? Computers use the binary number system, or base 2. It makes a good fit for computers because they have two electrical circuits. On and off are the two electrical circuits used in the operation of a computer system. The binary number system uses the numbers zero and one to calculate. In the base 2 system, each number is worth twice the value of the binary digit to the left of it. 2) The binary notation system is referred to as base two , since each digit’s place contributes the value of a power of two. You’ll also notice that a base two number system uses exactly two different symbols, typically a 0 and a 1. A base one notational system is known as a tally system. - Write down the values of three, five and six in base one. 3 = 111 5 = 11111 6 = 1111111 - Why do you think base one is called a tally system?

### What students are saying

• As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

• I cannot even describe how much Course Hero helped me this summer. It’s truly become something I can always rely on and help me. In the end, I was not only able to survive summer classes, but I was able to thrive thanks to Course Hero.

Dana University of Pennsylvania ‘17, Course Hero Intern

• The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
