Connor Kaniewski November 16, 2015 Mrs. Diorio American Seeker Delivery Points Paragraph There are many speeches from the What is an American? packet that influenced me. However, two speeches that persuaded me to think of important events in a different manner where Frederick Douglass’ The Meaning of July Fourth for the Negro and Henry David Thoreau’s Walden . Both speeches by these distinguished authors where written in a way that allowed me to consider my actions from a different prospective. Frederick Douglass gave his speech, The Meaning of July Fourth for the Negro , on July 4 th , 1852 to an audience full of abolitionists. In his speech, Douglass delivered a critical attack on the hypocrisy of a nation celebrating freedom and independence with speeches, parades and platitudes, while, within its borders, nearly four million humans were being kept as slaves.
